Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) — Tetebatu & Timbanuh Trekking Routes

1. What makes the Tetebatu & Timbanuh routes different from Sembalun or Senaru?

The Tetebatu and Timbanuh routes explore the quieter, less crowded southern slopes of Mount Rinjani. While Sembalun is known for savannahs and Senaru for popular crater views, the southern routes offer dense protected rainforests rich in wildlife (such as black ebony langurs), authentic local culture, peaceful trails, and access to Mount Rinjani’s 2nd Summit (3,500m) and Mount Sangkarean (3,200m).

2. Can we reach the main Rinjani Summit (3,726m) or Segara Anak Lake from Tetebatu or Timbanuh?

These specific 2-day programs focus on the Southern Crater Rims, Mount Sangkarean, and the 2nd Summit (3,500m). Descending to Segara Anak Lake from the southern crater rim is extremely steep and currently not recommended for standard trekking routes. However, the views of the crater lake and Mount Baru Jari from the southern rims are truly spectacular and unique!

3. How difficult are the Tetebatu & Timbanuh trekking trails?

The trails are rated moderate to challenging. The lower sections pass through shaded rainforests with manageable inclines, but as you approach the crater rims and the 2nd Summit (3,500m), the terrain becomes steeper and requires good physical fitness and endurance.

4. What wildlife might we see during the trek?

The dense rainforests of Tetebatu and Timbanuh are natural sanctuaries for Lombok’s endemic wildlife. You have a high chance of spotting the rare Black Ebony Langur (Lutung), Long-Tailed Macaques, tropical birds, wild orchids, and various species of butterflies.

5. What is included in the Rinjani Wonders trekking package?

Our packages include:

  • Professional, licensed local guides and experienced porters.

  • Freshly cooked meals, snacks, fruits, and hot/cold drinks prepared on the mountain.

  • National Park entry permits and trekking insurance.

  • Pick-up and transfer services to and from your hotel/location in Lombok.

6. What should I bring/pack for this trek?

We recommend packing:

  • Sturdy hiking boots or trail running shoes with good grip.

  • Warm layers (jacket, fleece, beanie, and gloves) as nighttime temperatures near the rim can drop significantly.

  • Trekking poles, headlamp/flashlight with extra batteries.

  • Rain jacket or poncho.

  • Personal medications, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small daypack.

7. When is the best time of year to hike the southern routes?

The official trekking season runs during the dry season, typically from April to December. Months between May and October offer the clearest skies and best sunrise/sunset views over the southern coastline and crater.
